Local students receive honors

MEMPHIS, Tenn. Julie Elise Entrekin graduated cum laude from Rhodes College with a bachelor's degree in sociology/anthropology. Entrekin was also on the Dean's List for the spring semester. She is the daughter of Rick and Joanne Entrekin of Meridian.
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. Birmingham-Southern College student Thomas Mitchell Robinson of Meridian received the President's Award during the college's 2001 Honors Day Convocation. The award is given to a graduating senior who best exemplifies the liberal arts mission of the college. Robinson, a history major, is the son of Greg and Nan Robinson.
OXFORD Matt Willis of Meridian won first place in the at-large competition in the 16th Annual Ken Wooten Scholars Bowl at the University of Mississippi. Willis was part of the Meridian Community College Scholars Team that competed against 16 other community colleges in the quiz-bowl format.
The MCC team also included James Wright, Jorge Vivar, Amye Faulkner and Orin Heidelberg, all of Meridian.
OXFORD Robert Johnson Marsalis of Meridian is among the spring initiates into Phi Kappa Phi academic honor society at the University of Mississippi. Marsalis is a senior studying business administration. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Wilton Lowell Marsalis.
COLUMBIA, S.C. Army Pfc. Hytoyia S. Williams has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson. Williams is the daughter of Vickie Brown and the granddaughter of Legurtha Drake, both of Meridian.
NASHVILLE, Tenn. Emily Kyles, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Everette W. Kyles of Meridian, has graduated magna cum laude from Lipscomb University with a bachelor's degree in American Studies and History.
JACKSON Joshua Maeda of Meridian has received the Philosophy Award at Bellhaven College. The award is presented to an outstanding senior majoring in philosophy.
HATTIESBURG Leah Nicole Williams has been selected to The National Dean's List at the University of Southern Mississippi. She has also been inducted into The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi and the Beta Gamma Sigma Honor Society. She has received an All-American Scholar Collegiate Award and is a President's List student.
Williams is a junior accounting major at USMi. She is the daughter of Bill and Martha Williams of Meridian.
STARKVILLE Scott L. Edwards of Meridian is the recipient of a $3,500 scholarship as a National Council of State Garden Clubs Scholar. Edwards is a new forest resources management graduate from Mississippi State University, and the son of the Rev. and Mrs. Wayne Edwards of Meridian.
The 2001 Rita Branning Burgy Scholars, earning $1,000 scholarship to Meridian Community College, are Adam Pickett of Meridian and John Bouder of Marion.
West Lauderdale High School graduate Brooke Newell has received the $1,000 Cora Thompson Johnson Scholarship. The scholarship is funded through the Meridian Community College Foundation.
West Lauderdale High School graduate Dane Milling has been named the 2001-2003 Meridian Exchange Club/Bo Russell Memorial Scholarship recipient. The two-year scholarship, which covers tuition and books, is funded by the Meridian Exchange Club through the Meridian Community College Foundation.
DECATUR Emily Boggan is this year's recipient of the Community College Excellence Scholarship presented by the University of Mississippi. Boggan, a pre-pharmacy major at East Central Community College, is the only community/junior college student in the state to receive the scholarship valued at $13,000 this year.
Boggan is the daughter of Charles and Debbie Boggan of Decatur.
DAYTON, Tenn. Kristin Hughes, daughter of Douglas and Cynthia Hughes of Meridian, has received her bachelor's degree with honors in Christian education/youth ministry from Bryan College.
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. Gary Merrell Portis, son of Dan and Shirley Curry of Meridian, has received a bachelor's degree in business administration and finance from Jacksonville University.
CLINTON James Logan Cooley was inducted into the Billy Ray Smith Chapter of the National Junior Honor Society at Clinton Junior High School this semester.
He is the son of James and Lynn Dean Cooley and the grandson of Dorothy S. Dean of Meridian and Carroll Dean of Moundville, Ala., all formerly of Waynesboro and the late Cammie and Gaston Cooley. He is the great-grandson of Sadie Shaw of Waynesboro and the late George F. Shaw.
Ashley Elizabeth Slayton of Meridian has been accepted into the University of Mississippi Medical Center School of Occupational Therapy. Slayton, a 1999 graduate of Meridian High School, is the daughter of Donnie and Brenda Slayton of Meridian.
Jenny Dianne Weeks, a 1999 graduate of Meridian High School, has been accepted into the University of Southern Mississippi College of Nursing for the fall semester. She is the daughter of James and Janete Weeks of Meridian.
