Lake opened its Class 1A best-of-three South State championship series with a 5-2 win over St. Aloysius in Vicksburg Thursday night.
All of the scoring came in the first three innings.
Lake got two runs in the top of the first as Jason McGee tripled and scored on a double by Jake Nester. Nester scored on a sacrifice fly by Bryan Williamson.
The Flashes got one run back in the bottom of the first.
The Hornets used a three-run second inning to go up 5-1. Eric Watkins and Eric Gunn started the inning with singles. Lee Dooley tried to bunt the runners over, but a throwing error left all runners safe and had Watkins scoring from second base. Jason Massey drove in a run with a fielder's choice and Nester closed out the scoring for Lake when he singled home Massey.
St. Aloysius got its second run in the bottom of the third.
Watkins (8-2) got the win, striking out four, walking one, and scattering 11 hits. St. Aloysius got nine hits and two doubles.
Nester had a single and a double for Lake, 26-7. Watkins and Gunn both went 2-for-3, while McGee added a triple as Lake had nine hits.
Charlie Amborn had two singles and a double for St. Aloysius, 22-4. Aaron George had a single and a double, while Alex Frisbee and Walker Hengst both had two singles.
