QUITMAN Mayor Tommy Blackburn told the Board of Aldermen Tuesday that the expanded, four-lane Highway 45 will open May 15.
The opening had been scheduled for late last year, but was pushed back several times. The new road will bypass Quitman. Going south, it will start at Clarkco State Park exit and will come out at DeSoto.
Three matters were discussed concerning the city's parks and recreation department during the Tuesday meeting.
First, city workers have completed the construction of a building at Sumrall Park which can be used for reunions and other gatherings. The city will charge a $25 user fee and a $25 deposit.
Aldermen also discussed ways to clean up and improve Kirkland Park and Parks Director Brian Dace was given the go-ahead to talk with officials of the Quitman School District about using the Quitman Junior High School gym for a basketball league next fall.
Aldermen handled several matters concerning drainage and sewage. They voted to seek bids for 900 feet of pipe to correct a drainage problem at Pineview Circle. They also voted to document a sewer break on the corner of West Franklin and South Archusa, next to Hardee's, as an emergency. The repair cost about $8,500.
