MCC's Weaver wins long jump

With the postseason less than three weeks away, Meridian Community College's track team continues to hit the trail hard in preparation for the Region 23 Meet at Hinds on April 26.
And the Eagles continue to do it against larger competition, as well.
This past weekend, MCC competed in the Troy State Invitational in Troy, Ala., a nine-team, non-scoring event that included the likes of Alabama, UAB, Samford and host Troy State. This weekend, coach Ley Fletcher's squad will head to the LSU Invitational.
MCC did come away from the Troy State with one first-place award and a host of other solid finishes.
Shannon Weaver won the long jump for the MCC women with a leap of 18 feet, 5.75 inches.
Maria Smith was second in the 100m low hurdles at 15.8, while Doella Miller was seventh in the 200m run at 26.5. The 4x100m relay team of Miller, Smith, Weaver and Yolanda Dunn was third with a time of 50.19.
A host of the men's team fared well, especially in the individual events.
MCC's Kenneth Wade was sixth in the 100m dash with a time of 11.14, while Greg Lambert was third in the 400m run at 51.8.
Four Eagles placed in the 800m run: Courtney Barlow was third with a time of 1:57, and Jerry Teachey (1:57.45) and James Packnet (1:58) were close behind and finished in fifth and sixth. The Eagles' Eric Jackson was seventh in the same race with a time of 2:01.
Gideon Chepkwone was third in the 1500m run with a time of 4:01, while teammate Damien Samuels was sixth in the same race with a time of 4:12.
Shedrick Moss was ninth in the 100m high hurdles with a time of 15.4, while Dale Moorehouse placed in the 400m hurdles with a time of 55.7.
MCC's 4x400m relay team of Barlow, Teachey, Packnet and Lambert combined for a fifth-place finish with a time of 3:20.
