Times may be bad in some sectors of the economy, but you would never know it at Structural Steel Services Inc., located in the South Industrial Park.
Established in 1975, the steel fabrication plant today is divided into five locations and a sixth one, to be located on Valley Road, will be up and running this summer. When it is completed, Structural Steel will operate with about 600,000 square feet of manufacturing space.
The company operates two shifts and employs 270 people. When the sixth plant opens, 40 new jobs will be created, Dulaney said.
During the early 1990s, about 50 percent of Structural Steel's business was with overseas countries. That included China, Japan and countries in South America.
Dulaney said. "Most of our business today is with the power companies which are building new generator plants.
Dulaney said this business is coming from a base of about 25 to 30 repeat customers.
Structural Steel turns out between 800 and 1,000 tons of steel per week. The company usually ships between 30 and 40 truckloads per week.
Dulaney gave a lot of credit for the business to his employees.
