Debates a good idea in upcoming city election

By Staff
April 1, 2001
Independent mayoral candidate William Hugh Johnson has fired the first volley in his campaign to hold at least five public debates prior to the June 5 general election. In a letter last week, Johnson invited the other candidates to agree to debates beginning the first week in May.
It is true that public debates help can focus the attention of busy citizens on major issues confronting the city. We agree with Mr. Johnson it is vital that the voting public make informed decisions on which candidate can best do the job.
The Meridian Star encourages the candidates to agree to a series of public debates. In addition, we will commit to coverage of them as a way of keeping our readers informed.
