Mayoral candidates agree to debates

In response to a request by William Hugh Johnson, several mayoral candidates said Wednesday they will be willing to participate in a series of debates before the municipal elections.
Johnson, a democratic candidate for mayor, sent a letter to all candidates last week requesting a series of debates to begin by first week in May.
In his letter Johnson said the candidates would be helping voters to make a more informed decision about who is most qualified to lead city government.
The request was welcomed with open arms by most candidates.
Independent candidate Bill McBride said he welcomed a chance to debate.
Republican candidate Wally Hudnall said he would be willing to participate in a series of debates, but only after the party primaries are over in May.
Charlie Haynes, an Independent candidate, could not be reached for comment.
Party primaries are set for May 1 with runoff elections set two weeks later. The general election is set for June 6.
