Morgan Freeman: A Mississippi institution

Like Meridian's own Sela Ward, actor Morgan Freeman was honored by state lawmakers the other day for his accomplishments. To his credit, his remarks were gracious, short and to the point.
Freeman whose screen image is known to millions for films such as "The Shawshank Redemption," and "Unforgiven" made it clear his Mississippi roots run deep. He said:
One of the smartest moves I've made in life is to come back home. I'll remember this always. I think maybe the best thing would've been if my parents had been able to see where their encouragement got me.''
Coming back home, Freeman found welcoming arms that readily embraced a man who embedded himself in his community and its activities. Freeman is one in a long line of accomplished Mississippians helping to make our state a better place. He is an outstanding role model for young people, one of Mississippi's treasures and a darn fine actor.
