Sylva-Bay ladies hold off Newton Co. Academy

The Lady Saints of Sylva-Bay Academy used a four-run, third-inning rally to take control of their District 3-A matchup at Bay Springs and earn a 10-7 win over Newton County Academy in slow-pitch softball action.
NCA (1-1) scored three times in the top of the seventh, but the Lady Generals' rally came up short.
Sylva-Bay got two hits apiece from Mitzi Bayless and Ingrid Norvell.
Newton County Academy was led by Chaney Hollingsworth, who was 2-for-3. Nicole Wall, Brandi Upton and Kristin Rice all added two hits apiece for the Lady Generals, who will see their next action Friday at 3:30 p.m., when they host Heidelberg Academy.
Newton County-Choctaw Central ppd: The only fast-pitch game in the area Wednesday was postponed when Choctaw Central and Newton County couldn't get their contest in.
Late Softball
Northwest Rankin 17-15, Wayne County 0-0: The Lady War Eagles were no-hit by Jennifer Johnson in a pair of division games with Northwest Rankin Tuesday.
Jennifer Johnson shut out the Lady War Eagles and got 11 runs from her teammates in the first inning as the Lady Cougars coasted to the 17-0 win. Ashley Dumas took the loss for Wayne County.
In the second game, Northwest Rankin (7-1) broke open a tight game with seven runs in the third inning on its way to a 15-0 win. Tara Carroll was charged with the loss for Wayne County.
Leake Academy 16-14, Oak Hill 1-4: The Rebelettes remained unbeaten on the year with a 16-4 and 14-4 sweep of Oak Hill Tuesday.
Leake, as well as winning pitcher Kristen Chipley, are both now 8-0 on the slow-pitch season.
In the opener, the Rebelettes got 21 base hits including four from Kelly Cumberland, who hit for the cycle with a homer, triple, double and single. Chipley had a triple, double and single and Paige Posey had a double and two singles.
In the second contest, Cumberland, Chipley and Anna Lisa Posey were among the multiple hitters for the Rebelettes, who had 15 hits.
Amite School 6, Heidelberg Academy 4: The Lady Rebels jumped to a 4-0 lead but couldn't hold on in action in the recent Amite School Tournament.
Heidelberg got three singles from Margaret Fleming and two singles and one RBI from Falon Deas in the loss.
Courtney Harrington added a pair of hits, Ramey McCarra had a double, Stephanie Sinclair singled and drove in a pair of runs and losing pitcher Suzanne Lightsey singled and drove in one.
Huntington (La.) School 12, Heidelberg Academy 10: Heidelberg was eliminated from the 13-team, double-elimination tourney at Amite when Huntington scored three times in the bottom of the seventh inning.
The Lady Rebels scored three of their own in the top of the seventh for a 10-9 lead, only to see Huntington rally for the win.
Leslie Higdon had three hits, one a triple, and three RBIs and Danielle Martin doubled twice, singled and had one RBI to lead Heidelberg Academy.
Sinclair added two hits and two RBIs and Deas, Fleming and Shana THornton had two hits each, as well. Lightsey had one hit and one RBI, McCarra had one hit and two RBIs, Emily Thornton doubled and had one RBI and Harrington also had one hit.
Other scores: In other recent slow-pitch contests, Heidelberg Academy earned a split with defending Class A state champ Central Academy, taking an 11-10 win in the nightcap after losing 15-5 in the opener. HA also earned a 7-6 win over Kemper Academy.
