Meridian Community College's golf team currently ranked 8th in the nation hosts the MCC Rush Invitational golf tournament today at Northwood Country Club. The tournament will give the Eagle golf team a chance to see how they stack up against the other Mississippi junior colleges.
In Mississippi junior college golf there's no bigger rivalry than the one between MCC and Hinds Community College.
Today MCC will face its rival from Jackson for the first time since a season-deciding Region 23 tournament in Tupelo a year ago. In that contest, Hinds walked away with the trophy and left two then MCC freshman with a bad taste in their mouths.
Stewart, ranked 21st in the nation, is part of one of the deadliest duos in junior college golf today. The other part is Newton's Dan Luke who currently sports a 7th place ranking in the national polls.
Both Stewart and Luke qualified for a spot in the national tournament in 2000 despite the teams' loss to Hinds.
Luke feels like this is a new year and a better MCC team.
Wall, the reigning MACJC player of the year, and Luke have been going at it since the two were in high school. Luke, a standout at Newton, and Wall, from Raymond, have been battling it out since the ninth grade.
Don't think for a minute that this tournament is just a two-team race though. With every junior college in the state of Mississippi entered-except for Gulf Coast CC, this tournament is sure to be an all out war.
