An 80-year-old Lauderdale County woman died Friday afternoon when her car left Linton Road, struck a tree and burst into flames.
Edna Linton was a resident of Linton Road, located in the southern part of the county a few miles past Southeast Middle School.
Emergency personnel at the scene of the accident were unsure of the identity of the victim. That information was released early Friday evening by Maj. Ward Calhoun of the Lauderdale County Sheriff's Department.
Chief Deputy Mike Mitchell said investigators believe Linton experienced some type of medical problem, possibly a heart attack, before her Buick left the road at 3951 Linton Road. The accident occurred at 2:16 p.m.
Lauderdale County Deputy Medical Examiner Clayton Cobler said he agrees with Mitchell's assessment.
The Lauderdale County Accident Investigation Team was dispatched to investigate.
Neighbors and people believed to be related to the woman watched as volunteer firefighters from Vimville Fire and Rescue draped a large cloth in front of the burned car.
Cobler said the initial autopsy report should be returned sometime tonight.
