The Clarkdale Lady Bulldogs struck for six runs in the first inning and were able to hold off the Union Lady Yellow Jackets 10-3 in prep fast-pitch softball action Thursday night.
In the fourth inning with one out, Megan Potate blasted what looked to be a triple, but her slide at third came up short. Still, third baseman JorD'an Orr scored, pushing the lead to 9-0. But the Lady Bulldogs (15-3, 6-0 in Division 5, Class 1A-2A-3A) weren't able to bring home any more base runners and the top of the fifth saw a Union rally.
UHS second baseman Frances McDougle reached first when her slow roller went fair halfway down the first base line. Then Morgan Milling came up and slapped a single to shallow center. After a change at catcher, a pair of passed balls got UHS (10-2) on the scoreboard.
Loren Kennedy added a sacrifice to score the Lady Jackets' third run. Marley Smith, the UHS starting pitcher, banged out a big triple, but wasn't able to get home.
Casey said his team had to play good defense and get good hitting.
In the Clarkdale fifth, Dana Alsup scored for the final margin, despite getting caught in a rundown after a passed ball.
Alsup's third inning sacrifice provided the Lady Bulldogs with a 7-0 lead and Morgan Wright's RBI single pushed it up another notch.
Smith fell to 6-1 with the pitching loss.
Wright was 3-for-3 with an RBI, leading the 10-hit attack, while Potate, Brandi Wright and Kaylea Thrash all had 2-for-4 efforts for CHS.
Thrash and Potate each had RBIs. Starting catcher Ashley Shelby had a triple and two RBIs. Orr added an RBI as well.
Breland, Smith and Milling accounted for the three UHS hits.
Clarkdale travels to Philadelphia for a 4 p.m. game today.
