The Southwestern Athletic Conference announced its men's and women's all-conference teams Wednesday, and a host of players with local ties were honored.
Former East Mississippi Community College standout Dewayne Jefferson was chosen as the men's Player of the Year after averaging 24.6 points per game good for third in the nation among Division I programs.
Jefferson, a 6-3 senior guard, led both the SWAC and the nation in 3-point field goals made per game with 4.08 per contest.
He was joined on the first team by teammate Henry Jordan (6-10 senior center) Alcorn State's Marcus Fleming (6-8 senior forward), Alabama State's Tyrone Levett (6-5 junior forward) and Alabama A&M's Desmond Cambridge (6-1 junior guard).
Jordan was named the Defensive Player of the Year.
Meanwhile, a pair of former Meridian Community College standouts were honored on the women's all-conference squad.
Guard Jacklyn Winfield of Southern (La.) University was voted as the Newcomer of the Year and was a first-team all-conference selection after averaging 20.6 points per game for the Lady Jaguars. The 5-8 junior led the league in scoring and in free-throw shooting percentage (.863).
Teammate Tammy Bullock, a 6-1 junior forward and another former MCC standout, was chosen to the second team.
Bullock and Winfield played at Southern this season for head coach Sandy Pugh, who carried the duo with her after coaching at Meridian last season.
