Officers arrest two suspects in series of local break-ins

A foiled burglary attempt has netted the Lauderdale County Sheriff's Department two suspects, who are believed to be involved in as many as eight area burglaries.
Lauderdale County Chief Deputy Mike Mitchell said 32-year-old Donald Hampton of 1915 21st St. was charged with two counts of burglary. Officers said more charges could be filed against Hampton and against his alleged accomplice, a juvenile.
Hampton and the boy were taken into custody Wednesday after they allegedly made an attempt to find out if anyone was home at a Lauderdale County residence, Mitchell said.
Mitchell said a deputy stopped Hampton's car and one of the suspects gave chase on foot. Both were apprehended and placed on investigative hold at the Lauderdale County Detention Facility.
Some of the burglaries have taken place in the southern portion of the county, Mitchell said. Investigators believe Hampton and his alleged accomplice also may be connected to several burglaries inside the city limits.
Mitchell said investigators have collected some stolen items, "but we don't have a large majority of it yet."
