Race organizers hope to get funky despite dreary forecast

The Meridian Athletic Association kicks off its 2001 season of events this Saturday with the Fourth-Annual Funky Monkey Duathlon that will once again be held at Lake Okatibbee. The starting gun is set for 8 a.m.
MAA president and competing athlete DeShon Davis hopes this year's event won't be spoiled by what forecasters are predicting as a 90 percent chance of rain on race day.
Davis also said the MAA is projecting anywhere from 85-120 racers this weekend.
Lake Okatibbee is located nine miles north of Meridian, just off Hwy 19. The race course consists of a 5K run, followed by a 30K bike race, before racers finish up with another mile-and-a-half run to the finish line.
Contestants who have already registered can pick up their race packets between 5-8 p.m. Friday at D.T. Grinders Restaurant at 1600 24th Avenue.
Race Day registration runs from 6-7 a.m. A beginner's meeting will be held before the race at 7:45.
