Lauderdale County officials have announced the Norfolk Southern Railroad crossing on Hawkins Crossing Road will be closed all day today for upgrades. The crossing is adjacent to Highway 80 East and is expected to reopen by the end of the day or early Wednesday.
The Homestead Road Norfolk Southern crossing will close for upgrades immediately after railroad officials complete work on the Hawkins crossing. The Norfolk Southern crossing on Marion Russell Road will be the next to receive upgrades. Officials say that crossing will probably close for upgrades Thursday.
WalkAmerica to kick off today
The Meridian WalkAmerica kick-off will be held today at 5:30 p.m. on the fifth floor of Citizens National Bank, located at 22nd Avenue. At the meeting, participants will receive information on the Meridian WalkAmerica that will take place April 28. The walk is sponsored by the March of Dimes, Union Planters Bank and Citizens National Bank. There will be food and beverages, door prizes and entertainment at the meeting. Pat Parelli gives free seminar
Equestrian Pat Parelli will hold a free seminar and demonstration today at the Scott County/Forest Coliseum in Forest. The session will last from 4-9 p.m. Parelli was a winning bareback bronc rider and successful trainer in California and is founder of the American Mule Association. The public is invited to attend. Way of the Cross to hold meeting
The second planning meeting for the Way of the Cross/Way of Peace Ecumenical Walk will be held Thursday at 4 p.m. and again at 7 p.m. in the large meeting room of St. Patrick's Parish Building. Anyone interested in general information or learning more about the event should be present for this evening meeting. It is the final planning session. All denominations are invited to participate in the walk and are invited to carry church banners during the walk.

Sorority throws Mardi Gras ball
Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Omicron Beta Omega Chapter, will host the third annual Mardi Gras Ball Saturday from 8:30 p.m.-1 a.m. at the Council of Organizations Building on 45th Avenue. Special Mardi Gras beads and masks will be given as door prizes. Entertainment will be provided by disk jockey Maurice Howard. All proceeds will go to the AKA Scholarship Fund. Weems invites public to ADHD seminar
Weems Community Mental Health Center will present a free workshop on attention deficit/hyperactive disorder on Feb. 26 in the East Mississippi Electric Power Association Auditorium. Some Enchanted Evening' to be performed
The musical, "Some Enchanted Evening," will be performed March 2, at 7 p.m., at the Auditorium of Carthage High School. The musical event will include music from Richard Rodgers and lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II. The music is from "Oklahoma," "Sound of Music" and "Cinderella."
The musical is sponsored by the Arts Development Committee of the Leake County Chamber of Commerce. Jeffrey Jones and Kinsey Goldman will direct the production. Tickets are $5 in advance for adults, and $3 for children under 12.
