DECATUR East Central Community College honored a former student and long-time friend Tuesday when a new walking trail was named in honor of the late state Rep. Dick Livingston.
Livingston, who attended ECCC from 1958-60, was the college's Alumnus of the Year in 1997. He was president of the alumni association on March 28, when he died after a battle with cancer.
Livingston's remarks came during ground-breaking ceremonies for an extension to the current walking trail, which is about a half-mile long. Other members of Livingston's family, friends and members of ECCC's board of trustees and staff were also in attendance.
When completed, the new trail will curve around a small lake, adding about a quarter-mile to the current trail. All of the trail is to be paved, lighted and handicapped-accessible.
