Interim police chief named

DEKALB Officials in this Kemper County town said they are not sure when they will replace resigning Police Chief Jeff Jowers.
Jowers tendered his resignation during Tuesday's Board of Aldermen's meeting, said Alderman Jack Harrison.
Jowers is leaving the DeKalb Police Department for a position as an agent with the Mississippi Bureau of Narcotics, Harrison said.
Harrison said the board has not yet taken any action on filling the position. Lt. Jerry Donald is currently acting as police chief, he said. Donald will likely be appointed to the position.
Harrison said the board may delay a vote on the matter until after this summer's election of new board members.
Although Jowers' resignation is effective next week, he will likely taking some leave he had accumulated, Harrison said.
Jowers was appointed police chief in 1997 following the death of Sheriff Mike McKee, who was shot and killed during a domestic dispute. McKee's position was filled by then-police chief Ralph Sciple. Jowers had been in law enforcement for several years prior to his appointment as police chief.
The board of aldermen meets again on March 6.
