QUITMAN One of the "worse roads" in Clarke County is about to get a facelift.
The Clarke County Board of Supervisors met in special session Friday, accepting bids to replace County Road 670 which runs through the East Quitman community.
Magnolia Road and Bridge Co. was the low bidder, at $953,504.21, for the job, which must be done in 200 working days.
Fleming added that 56 easements had to be signed before the three-mile project could be let, and the county had to receive a 80-foot right away. The traffic count averages at 600 cars per day.
No local road funds will be used for the project. A federal grant will pay for 80 percent of the road, and 20 percent will come from the State Aid fund.
In another matter, the supervisors voted to purchase a new pumper truck for the Harmony Volunteer Fire Department. Harmony, which launched operations a couple of years ago, has its rating at 9, and Fleming said the new truck would help lower the district's rating to an 8.
The truck is expected to cost about $100,000.
Supervisors are also getting bids to build a station house for the Desoto Volunteer Fire Department.
