QUITMAN As Quitman prepares to celebrate its 100th birthday, organizers hope that former residents and old friends will return home to join in the festivities.
The Centennial Celebration will be divided into two parts. A reception is planned for Sunday, Feb. 18, from 2 pm.-5 p.m. at the Quitman Depot. There will be opening remarks and a brief historical perspective of the town. Then guests are invited to tour a display of photos from the past throughout the Depot building. Coffee and snacks will be available in the Depot meeting room.
The celebration will continue on the weekend of Saturday, March 31, and Sunday, April 1. Saturday's activities include a parade, train rides to Enterprise on an antique coaches, a street fair/flea market, historical displays, a historical pageant, children's games, sidewalk sales by businesses, art exhibits, good food and much more.
On Sunday, there will be an old fashion "dinner-on-the-grounds" beginning at noon at First Baptist Church. Everyone is invited to bring a "covered dish" and come for lunch.
Moore is working on the parade committee and helping in lining up the entertainment.
In a way, Moore herself has just "come home to Quitman." She lives in Enterprise with her husband, Owen, and has worked at Rush Hospital for the past 20 years. But last November, she came to work at H.C. Watkins Memorial Hospital as an administrative assistant.
She and others invite those who may have been away a lot longer to make their plans to attend one (or all) of the Centennial Celebration events. For more information, call Quitman Town Hall at 776-3728.
