Mississippi College academic competition to begin Feb. 10

The Academic Competition will begin Saturday, Feb. 10, at 11 a.m. and will run for 15 weeks. The televised quiz program will showcase the top scholastic talent from public and private high schools throughout Mississippi. The program is being sponsored by Mississippi College and WDBD-Fox 40. Mississippi College students will produce and film the shows on the Clinton campus.
Area schools competing include Meridian, West Lauderdale and Lamar, along with 46 other schools from across the state. Students who compete in Academic Competition are offered academic scholarships to Mississippi College.
The NASA Office of Education at John C. Stennis Space Center is accepting student applications for this year's Summer High School Apprenticeship. SHARP is a NASA sponsored, research-based mentoring program for students who excel in mathematics, engineering, science and technology. Students serve as paid apprentices while working with NASA mentors in a specific area of science engineering or technology for eight weeks during the summer.
To be eligible, the student must be a U.S. citizen, at least 16 years of age by the beginning of the program in June and be available on a full-time basis for the duration of the program. The student must also be a permanent resident of Mississippi or Louisiana and attend a school within a 50-mile radius of Stennis Space Center. Applications have been mailed to area schools, students interested in participating should contact their school guidance counselors. The deadline for applications is Feb. 28. The United States Department of Agriculture Farm Service Agency is seeking eligible participants for the Livestock Assistance Program and Crop Disaster Program.
LAP provides direct payments to eligible producers who suffered grazing losses due to natural disaster during 2000. Counties must be declared a disaster area by a declaration from the president of the United States or the secretary of agriculture. All Mississippi counties were declared a disaster for 2000. Each county must request approval through the National Farm Service Agency office. A county must have suffered a 40 percent or greater loss of grazing production for three or more consecutive months during the LAP crop year and certify grazing losses to the county office.
The closing date for these signups has yet to be determined. For more information, call the Clarke County Farm Service Agency at 776-9009, ext. 2 or the Lauderdale County Farm Service Agency at 483-4100.
