Animal shelter options under review by supervisors

Lauderdale County supervisors are considering new options to help a local Humane Society organization with animal control.
At a work session Thursday, District 3 Supervisor Craig Hitt suggested letting the organization use buildings on a proposed baseball field site at Lover's Lane.
One is partially enclosed and another already has four stalls which could accommodate larger animals, he said. "If they (the organization) had a building, it would take very little time and effort to get them started."
District 5 Supervisor Ray Boswell said the buildings are worth $75,000 to $100,000.
Board President Jimmie Smith said supervisors initially discussed using some of the site's buildings for storing maintenance equipment or using them for security. He said the buildings may also be in the way if recreational areas need to be extended later to include trails, additional ball parks or tennis courts.
Supervisors agreed to look at the site before making any decisions.
Humane Society organizer and interim treasurer Cheryl Walton said later the organization doesn't have enough money or materials to construct a building yet, but they have enough to renovate an existing building.
