Neshoba Central's Lady Rockets had a big week on the hardwood last week as they knocked off a pair of ranked teams.
On Jan. 23, the Lady Rockets beat then-No. 2 Meridian 56-53 behind 25 points from senior guard Tausha Evans. The Neshoba girls followed that up with a 73-68 win over then-No. 10 Columbus on Friday with Evans tossing in 37 points. Both games were at NCHS.
The Lady Rockets went from being unranked to No. 10 in the state this week. Then came Tuesday's 46-43 loss to unranked Northeast Lauderdale, also at NCHS.
Perfection: The Choctaw Central Lady Warriors breezed through the Division 5-3A regular season with a 6-0 mark.
The Newton Tigers did the same thing in Division 7-2A as they went 7-0.
Oh happy day: Last week was a fine one for three teams who laid long losing streaks to rest.
The Nanih Waiya boys got their first win in two years when they routed Sturgis Friday night. The Warriors improved to 1-14 with the win.
The Carthage girls ended a 20-game losing streak with a win at Edinburg on Friday. The Lady Tigers improved to 2-21 with the victory.
The Sebastopol Lady Bobcats put a 15-game losing streak to rest with a win at Puckett on Friday.
On a roll: The South Leake Wildcats have won their last 23 games en route to a 26-1 mark under coach Richard Rivers of Union, who guided South Leake to the Class 2A state championship last season.
The Lake Lady Hornets beat Forest Tuesday to extend their win streak to 15 games.
The War Eagles of Wayne County used a victory over Heidelberg on Tuesday to push their streak to 15 straight wins.
The Kemper County Wildcats beat Carthage on Tuesday to extend their win streak to nine.
The Noxubee County girls will carry an eight-game win streak into Friday's game with B.L. Moor at Macon.
The Choctaw Central Lady Warriors upped their win streak to eight with their win over J.Z. George on Tuesday.
The Leake Academy Rebelettes take a seven-game win streak into the Academy 3-AA Tournament at East Rankin.
Looking for some relief: The Scott Central Rebels fell to 0-17 with their loss to Lake Friday night.
The Carthage boys dropped their 11th straight with Tuesday's loss to Kemper County.
The Clarkdale Lady Bulldogs will take a nine-game skid into Friday's game with Enterprise at Clarkdale. The Enterprise Lady Bulldogs snapped a nine-game slide with their win over Raleigh on Tuesday.
All good things must end: The Newton County Lady Cougars had an 11-game win streak snapped with Friday's loss to Choctaw Central at Decatur.
Going batty: One of the biggest highlights of the first half of the Forest-Kosciusko boys' basketball game at Forest Saturday night was when a bat buzzed the crowd and strafed the floor.
The bat repeatedly sent the crowd scurrying, but did not reappear for the second half as Forest went on to take a 60-39 win.
Once is enough: When the Heidelberg Academy Rebels lost at Columbia Academy on Jan. 16, HA boys' coach Jamie Gavin saw something he hopes he doesn't ever have to watch again.
The Cougars from Columbia made 17 3-pointers in beating the Rebels. "They only made about six two-point baskets," Gavin said.
