Deweese to undergo cancer treatment

By By Ben Alexander/The Meridian Star
Feb. 2, 2001
Businessman and civic leader Glen Deweese is expected back in Meridian today as he prepares to begin chemotherapy treatment for an inoperable tumor discovered last week.
Deweese, 69, chairman of the East Mississippi Business Development Corporation, spent the last several days at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas undergoing preliminary diagnosis and counseling.
Deweese traveled to Houston after Dr. Joel Callahan, a physician at Jeff Anderson Regional Medical Center in Meridian, discovered the tumor last week and advised him to consult a specialist.
Putnam said although the news could have been better, physicians at M.D. Anderson were optimistic that chemotherapy could shrink the tumor down enough to perform surgery, if necessary.
According to Putnam, Deweese will make trips back to Houston every 30 to 45 days to check in with physicians there about the progression of the chemotherapy. It may be months before doctors are certain whether the tumor will be operable or not, according to Putnam.
