From staff reports
Northeast Lauderdale picked up its first-ever win over Meridian High School in boys' soccer action Saturday with a 2-1 squeaker over the Wildcats.
The Trojans and Cats decided to play the game as an add-on contest, Northeast coach James Matthews said, since both had encountered so many rainouts this season.
Northeast took a 1-0 lead on a goal by Drew Smith in the first half, as Smith scored off a corner kick by Russell Huntley.
After Meridian tied the contest early in the second half, Northeast got the winning goal from Kyle Stoddard this time on an assist from Smith.
Chase Spencer was in goal for the Trojans, while fullbacks Jay Jacobs and Ben Snider, sweeper John Kueven and stopper back Chris Stevens were all noted for their excellent defensive play.
Northeast's boys improved to 9-4 with the victory, and will see action again Tuesday when the Trojans host West Jones in a key Division 5 matchup. Northeast is in the playoffs, but the winner of Tuesday's game will head to the postseason as the division champ.
