Jackson State whips UAPB; Valley falls to Grambling

John Chandler scored 18 points on six 3-pointers and Richard Bradley added 12 points as Jackson State defeated Arkansas-Pine Bluff 76-53 Monday night.
The Tigers (3-17, 3-6 Southwestern Athletic Conference) shot 49 percent and held Arkansas-Pine Bluff (1-16, 1-8) to under 37 percent shooting.
Lavell Pogue led Pine Bluff with 12 points.
Kendell Noel scored 11 points and Royal Maxwell had 10 for Jackson State. Chandler was 6-for-8 from 3-point range.
Sophomore forward Cliff Walker, a former Meridian High School standout, had seven points and 15 reboubnds for the Tigers.
Grambling St. 107, MVSU 84: Keith Howell (21 points) and Randy Hymes (20) led six players in double figures and Grambling used 73 percent shooting in the second half to roll past Valley.
Grambling (3-13 overall, 3-6 SWAC) made 18-of-33 field goal attempts in rolling to a 51-47 halftime lead, then 22-of-30 shots in the second half to outscore MVSU (10-7, 6-3) by 56-37 in the second half.
Nick Mitchell made 10-of-10 free throws to finish with 18 points for Grambling, William McDonald had 15, and Paul Haynes and Devin Ewing added 12 points apiece.
Former East Mississippi Community College standout DeWayne Jefferson, who made 13-of-15 free throws, led MVSU with 31 points and Ashley Robinson had 22 points.
Hopson again earns honors: Former Kemper County High and EMCC standout Latoya Hopson was chosen the American Southwest Conference Player of the Week Monday for the second straight week and the third time this season. Hopson averaged 18.5 points and 12.5 rebounds in two road wins last week for the Mississippi College Lady Choctaws. Hopson has 11 double-doubles this season.
