Former EMCC star leads Valley past Delta State

ITTA BENA Kevin Conley sank a 3-pointer to break an 81-81 tie with less than two minutes to play to help Mississippi Valley State edge Delta State University 88-84 Wednesday night.
With the win, Valley swept the season series and improved to 9-6 overall. The Statesmen, who had their three-game winning streak snapped, fell to 10-6 on the year.
Delta State held a 41-30 lead in the first half, only to see the Delta Devils score the final 12 points of the half and take a 42-41 lead.
Former East Mississippi Community College standout DeWayne Jefferson hit one of his five first-half 3-pointers to give MVSU the halftime edge.
Walter Jackson paced four Statesmen in double figures with 21 points and was also DSU's top rebounder with seven.
Anthony Schiro and Dennis Douglas followed with 13 points and Jon Parker had 11 points. Momir Gajic also had six rebounds.
Jefferson wound up with 41 points on the night that included a 7-of-14 shooting performance from behind the three-point arch to lead the Devils.
Ashley Robins had 10 points as the only other Valley State player in double figures.

Delta State will return to Gulf South Conference action Saturday, as the Statesmen host Christian Brothers at 8 p.m.
DSU Women 77, MVSU 38: The only question remaining with 15 minutes left in the game wasn't whether the Lady Statesmen would defeat Mississippi Valley State University, but if the Delta State University women's basketball would reach its 74.4 points per game average.
They did, as the Lady Statesmen cruised past the Delta Devilettes inside the R.W. Harrison HPER Complex with an easy 77-38 victory over the Devilettes.
DSU opened the contest slowly, shooting only 38 percent from the field in the first half, but the Lady Statesmen came back in the second half with a 22-7 run.
Delta State shot 57 percent from the floor in the second-half to finish the game with a 47.5 shooting percentage.
Delta State also hit the boards hard, outrebounding Valley by a margin of 53-36.
Katrina King led DSU with 23 points and 12 rebounds.
Caroline Boclair followed close behind in both the scoring and rebounding columns with 15 points and 10 carums.
Shelly Campbell offered an offensive threat off the bench, as she collected 12 points on a 6-10 shooting performance.
Anglia Williams was the only double-figure scorer for Valley, finishing with 15 points for the Delta Devilettes.
The win moves Delta State to an impressive 18-2 overall record on the year, while Valley falls to 1-15 on the year.
The victory marks the 31st DSU victory in head-to-head competition.
Delta State's women will will also return to Gulf South Conference action this Saturday with a home game against conference foe Christian Brothers.
The contest is scheduled to tip off at 6 p.m.
