East Mississippi Community College head coach Steve Hull has said all along that he wanted his team to put itself in a position to pick up some big wins late in the season.
Monday night at Scooba, Hull's Lions got one of those wins.
Despite trailing by seven points at halftime, East Mississippi's men rallied to knock off Northwest Mississippi Community College 79-77 in North Division junior college basketball action.
EMCC's women were not as fortunate, losing a 108-84 shootout to the visiting Lady Rangers.
In the men's game, Northwest led 33-26 at halftime, only to see homestanding EMCC erupt for 53 points in the second half as the Lions improved to 10-7 overall.
Raphael Edwards scored 18 points to lead East Mississippi, while Dennis Williams scored 17. Rashard Alonza had 13, Ryan Rodriguez had 10, and Lamario Mapp and McKenzie Lash scored seven points apiece.
Northwest lost despite placing five players in double figures.
In the women's game, EMCC fell behind 50-39 at halftime, and lost despite a game-high 30 points from former Meridian High School standout Kim Davis.
The Lady Lions, who picked up their first win of the season just last week, fell to 1-5 in North Division play and 1-16 overall.
Donna Franklin, another ex-MHS star, added 13 points and Kenyetta Moore of Kemper County had 11.
