VFD consolidation means insurance savings

Taking a page from the "good government" manual, three Lauderdale County volunteer fire departments are consolidating operations in a way that means something to homeowners.
The resulting Class 8 fire rating means savings on homeowner's insurance costs for residents of Bailey, Pine Springs and Shucktown.
As reported in The Meridian Star last week, the new VFD district encompasses a 50-square-mile area north of the Meridian city limits to the Kemper County line, and east of Okatibbee Reservoir to a point just west of Highway 39 North.
This is an example of VFDs working together to improve service and make their life and property saving operations more efficient and effective.
That the consolidation produces a savings for residents of the areas is a much-appreciated bonus.
Officials presented the idea to the Lauderdale County Board of Supervisors earlier this month and received a positive response. Fire chiefs of the various interests are pleased by the arrangement. And, area homeowners should be very happy to see insurance rates go down.
VFDs perform an essential public safety service and volunteers or donations are always accepted. To find out how you can help this new district get off to a rousing start, call 482-9856.
