Northeast teams sweep a pair in Sam Dale Tournament

The 2001 Sam Dale/Walter Ethridge Memorial Tournament began play Thursday night at Northeast Lauderdale High School.
The event saw the Southeast Lauderdale Lady Tigers, the Kemper County Wildcats, and both the homestanding Trojans and Lady Trojans of Northeast coming out with wins.
Action resumes today in the tournament with Southeast Lauderdale and Enterprise meeting in the 4:30 p.m. and 5:45 p.m. contests. Northeast Lauderdale will host Kemper County in the 7 p.m. and 8:15 contests.
Southeast Lauderdale girls 67, Kemper County 46: Southeast jumped out to an early 14-9 first quarter lead and then held a 31-25 advantage at the half.
The Lady Tigers picked up the pace by scoring a combined 36 points in the second half to take the 67-46 victory.
Senior guard Monique Horner led Southeast with a game-high 35 points.
Monique Mosley led Kemper County with 13 points, as Brooke Hudson added 11.
Kemper County boys 76, Southeast Lauderdale 51: Southeast Lauderdale kept the first boys' game of the evening a close one with key 3-point shots by Ben Reed and Anthony Horner.
Kemper County, however, pulled away in the third quarter, as the Wildcats outscored the Tigers 23-8 en route to the 76-51 victory.
Kendrick Gale led a balanced Wildcat attack with 11 points. Reed led the Tigers with 16, while Horner added 14.
Northeast Lauderdale girls 50, Enterprise 26: The Lady Trojans pulled away an easy win without the help of senior post player Dorecious Powe, the team's leading scorer.
Instead, Northeast got help from Quin Jackson and Jana Olczak. The Lady Trojans held a 25-9 halftime advantage to take the 50-26 victory.
Teela McBride had 14 points for Enterprise. Jackson had 14 for Northeast, along with Olczak's 11.
Northeast Lauderdale boys 71, Enterprise 43: The Trojans were looking to gain another win against the Bulldogs this year.
However, they had to do it without junior forward Stephen Dyess, who was injured against West Jones earlier this week, and senior forward Clinton Hales, who left the game with an ankle injury.
The Trojans went up 22-10 at the end of the first and took a 40-12
halftime lead. The Bulldogs answered back with shots by Bryan Bester and Cory Boggan to try to rally in the second half, but it wasn't enough, as the Trojans took the 71-43 win.
Bester netted 12 and Boggan scored eight for the Bulldogs.
Marcus Betts added 11 points and Kalani White had nine for Northeast.
