Working at Meridian Community College, Ray Holsley always gave his best effort but the retired custodian went above and beyond Friday when he presented a scholarship to a deserving freshman.
The MCC Foundation has established a $1,000 annual scholarship in his name.
Eva Lockhart, a freshman on the girl's basketball team, became the first recipient of the scholarship at a ceremony Friday morning. Lockhart said it was a privilege to be the first person to receive the award.
The scholarship will cover one year's tuition for its recipient.
Holsley recently retired from MCC after 21 years, but staff members say he is still a fixture at the library, where goes to read. He said he wanted to continue to contribute to the college.
MCC spokesman Ann Dowdle said Holsley is a great example of what being a charitable giver means to the college.
Holsley said his donation also allows him to help complete one of his loftiest goals to make a difference in the life of a child.
