Meridian wins opener in Poplar Bluff

Meridian won its opening-round game in the Poplar Bluff, Mo., Tournament Wednesday.
Meridian improved to 14-4 on the season with a 70-61 win over Sikeston in the opening-round contest.
Micheal Davis led Meridian with 17 points while Quadrick Griffin added 13 points. Jeremy Ruffin added 11 points while Tony Dunn chipped in nine.
Tory James had 23 points for Sikeston.
Newton girls 53, Prentiss 49: Newton jumped out to a 14-6 first-quarter lead and never looked back as the Lady Tigers held off Prentiss Thursday in the Hattiesburg Tournament.
The Lady Tigers, who improved to 9-7 on the season, will play Hazlehurst today at 12:15 a.m.
After jumping out to the big lead, Prentiss outscored Newton 17-13 and trailed 27-23 at the half.
Prentiss further cut into the lead in the third by outscoring Newton 15-14. But the Lady Tigers took the fourth 12-11 and held on for the four-point win.
Lotonya Jordan led all scorers with 15 points while Creoshia Williams had 14 points. Kotreece Bender chipped in 10 points.
