Indianola upsets top-ranked Jackson Prep

DECATUR Margie Scroggins scored 10 of her 17 points in the fourth quarter of Saturday's girls' championship of the MPSA Central Mississippi Classic at East Central Community College as the unranked Indianola Lady Colonels knocked off top-ranked Jackson Prep 46-40.
Scroggins was named tournament MVP as Indianola improved to 21-3. She averaged 21.3 points in the Lady Colonels' three wins here.
Indianola led 11-7 at the end of the first quarter and took a 25-18 edge into halftime. The Lady Colonels extended their lead to 29-19 only to have senior guard Diana Miles pick up her fourth foul with 4:20 left in the third period. Prep closed the period with an 8-0 run to trail by only two (29-27).
Miles fouled out in the first minute of the fourth quarter with Indianola up 31-27. This time, Scroggins took over as the Lady Colonels led by as much as 10 (41-31) with 2:09 to play.
Indianola also got 10 points from Elizabeth Long, seven from Lesley Ely, and six from Marcy Lancaster.
Not that Prep made it easy for Waldrup's squad.
Prep, 17-2, got 18 points from Meghan Odom and eight from Catherine McNeel.
Leake girls 72, Central 41: Marisa Henry scored 24 points and Sue Chennault had 22 to lead the Rebelettes to the third-place victory.
Leake led 16-9 after one quarter, took a 39-16 advantage into halftime, and built its lead up to 57-32 by the end of the third quarter.
Chennault had 11 of her 22 points in the second period.
The Rebelettes, 18-4, also got seven points from Kristin Caldwell and six each from Kelly Cumberland and B.J. Helton. Leake went 2-1 in the tournament.
Central, 12-12, got 16 points from Margaret McClure and nine each from Carrie Coker and Lynlee Henley.
Sylva-Bay girls 40, Kemper 39: Lauren Husbands hit five 3-pointers in leading Sylva-Bay to the win in the fifth-place game.
Husbands finished with 17 points. Amber Carlisle added 14 as the Lady Saints improved to 16-5 after going 3-1 in the tournament. The only loss was to top-ranked Jackson Prep.
The game was tied at 9-9 after a quarter before Kemper breezed into halftime with a 27-18 lead. Behind three 3-pointers from Husbands, Sylva-Bay used a 16-6 advantage in the third quarter to go up 34-33.
Kemper, 7-11, got 14 points from Alicia Dufour, 11 from Jessica Harpole, and 10 from Jen Myers.
Sylva-Bay senior forward Katye Tubb, who suffered a knee injury against Prep, is scheduled to have an MRI on Thursday but is expected to be out at least until the district tournament.
