Enterprise sweeps Choctaw County

In a rare Mississippi-Alabama clash, Enterprise swept a pair of games from Choctaw County Friday night in prep basketball action.
In the boys contest, Enterprise broke open a close game in the second quarter by outscoring the visiting Tigers 21-7 to take a 44-23 lead at the half.
After Choctaw County outscored Enterprise 14-13 in the third, Enterprise took the fourth 23-17 for the final margin of victory an 80-54 decision.
Enterprise got a balanced scoring attack as four Bulldogs scored in double figures. Cory Boggan led all scorers with 23 points while Burrell Gandy had 16 points. Mitchell Burns chipped in 15 points while Bryan Bester contributed 14 and Dereck James had eight.
Choctaw County was led by LaKendrick Ruffin, who had 18 points while Donald Ruffin had 15 points.
Enterprise girls 49, Choctaw County 45: The Lady Bulldogs won their second game in a row as they overcame a big first-half deficit to pull past the visitors from Butler, Ala.
Choctaw County led 13-7 after the first and 29-15 at the half.
But Enterprise fought back in the third as the Lady Bulldogs outscored Choctaw County 18-6 to cut the lead to 35-33. Enterprise then took the fourth quarter 16-10 to take the win.
Shonda Bester led all scorers for Enterprise with 17 points while Jerra Cook had 11 points.
Amanda DuBose led Choctaw County with 15 points while Brittany Manor had 13 points.
Enterprise returns to action tonight at West Lauderdale.
Southern Choctaw boys 73, Coffeeville 64: Southern Choctaw overcame a 10-8 first-quarter deficit as the Indians outscored Coffeeville 33-12 in the second quarter en route to a nine-point victory.
After leading 41-22 at the half, the 4-1 Indians maintained the lead and held on for the win.
Shawn Cause and Marques Hill each had 13 points apiece for the Indians, who will take on McIntosh tonight in an area contest.
Wayne County girls 59, Brandon 37: Wayne County used a big first half as the Lady War Eagles pounded Brandon by 22.
Wayne County jumped out to a 15-6 first quarter lead and led 36-16 at the half and easily held on for the win.
Sharkeshia Jordan led a balanced scoring attack with 11 points while Karla Bartee, Arletha Bartee and Thelma Cooper each had 10 points apiece.
Wayne County, which improved to 11-3 and 1-1 in division play, hosts Choctaw County on Tuesday.
Wayne County boys 73, Brandon 51: Geary Jackson's War Eagles broke open a tight contest with a 24-8 third quarter.
The War Eagles jumped out 20-15 and led 35-27 at the half before exploding in the third. Wayne improves to 11-2 overall with the win and 2-0 in division play.
Rayford Everett led Wayne County with 20 points while Dietrick Slater had 15 and Quentin Mayfield 10.
Bryant May led Brandon with 17 points.
Sumter Academy girls 43, Jackson Academy 28: Sumter broke open a tight contest in the third quarter as the Lady Eagles cruised past visiting Jackson Academy.
Sumter, ranked No. 9 in among AISA schools, led 9-6 after the first and 20-17 at the half before outscoring Jackson 16-8 in the third to cruise to the win.
Natalie Fox led all scorers with 11 points and four rebounds while Jess Watkins had nine points and eight rebounds.
Sumter, 8-1, returns to action on Jan. 4 when the Lady Eagles will host Marengo Academy.
Sumter Academy 55, Jackson Academy 22: Sumter used 15-2 second and fourth quarters as the Eagles routed Jackson Academy.
Sumter, 5-4, led 11-8 but jumped out to a 26-10 halftime lead as the Eagles cruised to the win.
Shane Martin led Sumter with 24 points while John Upchurh added 12.
Newton girls 60, Morton 50: Morton jumped out to a 19-8 first-quarter lead but Newton used a big second half to take the Division 7-2A win.
After the big first, Morton led 34-22 at the half. Newton stormed back in the second half as the Lady Tigers outscored Morton 20-6 in the third and 18-10 in the fourth to take the 10-point win.
Kreoshia Williams led Newton (8-5, 3-0) with 19 points while Kotreece Bender had 13 points and LaTonya Jordan 11.
Newton made 10-of-15 free throws in the game and five-of-seven in the fourth.
Sylva-Bay Academy girls 49, Presbyterian Christian 47: The Lady Saints improved to 13-4 on the season with the tight win over Presbyterian Thursday night.
Sylva-Bay trailed 17-13 after one quarter and was down two at halftime, but used an 11-6 advantage in the third quarter to take the lead.
Amber Carlisle pumped in 23 points to lead SBA, while Katye Tubb and Laura Husbands scored eight apiece.
Haleigh Fowler led Presbyterian Christian with 18 points.
SBA's next action will be in the MPSA Christmas Tournament at East Central Community College.
Presbyterian Christian 49, Sylva-Bay Academy boys 41: The Saints weren't as fortunate, as thy fell behind early and came up short in a second-half rally.
Sylva-Bay, which is now 8-5, was down 11-4 after one quarter and still trailed by seven at halftime. The Saints cut it to one heading into the fourth, where they were outscored 16-9.
Andres Norvell led Sylva-Bay with 18 points, while Kaleb Deese threw in 11.
Ben Morgan led Presbyterian with 19 points and Chris Prince scored 16.
