Northwest Junior High School goes all out for United Way

By By Sharon White/The Meridian Star
Dec. 16, 2000
One penny at a time, students at Northwest Junior High School have raised $1,000 for the United Way of Lauderdale County's 2000 campaign.
United Way officials brought Lauderdale County's campaign to a "soft close" at the end of November, but will not have all pledges and contributions in hand until the end of the year.
This year's goal is $760,000, which will be used to fund 18 local community agencies during 2001.
She said students raise money for a community project every year under the guidance of the Northwest Student Council. In January 2000, the students decided to collect pennies for the United Way.
The group asked local business owners to allow them to place collection jars on counters all over town. Arby's said yes. Of the $1,000 presented by Northwest students to United Way officials Friday, $100 came from that jar.
