Meridian's Youth Excitement Team has welcomed AmeriCorps tutors to the Partnership for Student Success program.
Twenty-four AmeriCorps members serve as teacher assistants in five Meridian schools, and receive benefits such as insurance, living stipends and child care. Of the 24 local AmeriCorps tutors, five live in public housing.
The Meridian Housing Authority is a first-time contributor to the YET program, as are Greg Lane of All State Insurance and Hare Mortgage Co. Other contributors include Jim Moore of the AmSouth Foundation and Tal Braddock of AmSouth Bank.
Braddock said his contribution is the result of his personal admiration for Houston.
The AmeriCorps tutors are:
Witherspoon Elementary: Marcie Barrett, Tonya Baron, Ebony Pearson, Elizabeth Roberts and Dwyla Wilson.
West End Elementary: Chanel Clark, Kimberly Cross, Christina Hearn, Monica Rue and Diana Taylor.
Oakland Heights: Brandi Easterling, Bridgette Gibbs, Kathleen Koch, Kimberly Lewis and Cicily Patton.
Harris Upper Elementary: Sylvia Johnson, Tina Battle, Troy Gray, Latonia Johnson and Kristina Patrick.
Carver Middle School: Kathy Armstrong, Kenyatta Fikes, Cassandra Hunter and Willean Lewis.
The Youth Excitement Team is a non-profit organization whose members serve the educational needs of young people in Meridian and the surrounding area. YET also offers an after-school program that employs 15 AmeriCorps workers.
