Audiences at the annual Singing Christmas Tree concert presented by Highland Baptist Church are often in awe of the performance especially the tree.
The 35-foot man-made Christmas tree complete with colorful ribbons, bows, greenery and twinkling lights features the church's 80-member choir performing a variety of holiday songs. And at the top, just below the shining star, is Carol Wiggins.
For the last eight of her 16 years of performing in the annual concert, Wiggins has held the top spot. And while she loves having the best view in the house, Wiggins said the position was not by choice.
One year, while singing with a group that performs while the other choir members change clothes, Wiggins ended up being the last person to go up.
Ironically, Wiggins had a fear of heights.
And while having "the top spot" has its advantages, there are some disadvantages.
It's also hotter above.
Still, Wiggins covets her spot.
She usually goes up before everyone else to get acclimated.
Performances of The Singing Christmas Tree are scheduled for today and Sunday at 4 and 7 p.m. Admission to the concert is free, however concert-goers must have a ticket.
Highland Baptist Church is located at 3400 27th St. The church is handicap accessible. For more information, call 482-0191.
