Northeast girls come back to beat Laurel

Northeast Lauderdale overcame a third-quarter deficit as the Lady Trojans outscored Laurel 21-10 in the fourth quarter to win a 5-4A contest with homestanding Laurel.
Northeast, 6-5, jumped ahead early and led 11-4 after the first but Laurel used a 14-9 second quarter to cut the halftime lead to 20-18.
Laurel matched that 14-9 second period in the third and led 32-29 after three.
But Northeast took control of the game in the fourth by outscored the Lady Tornadoes 21-10 in the fourth to take the win.
Quin Jackson led Northeast with 24 points.
Northeast returns to action Friday at Enterprise.
Laurel boys 71, Northeast 69: Northeast lost a tough 5-4A contest on the road Tuesday to rival Laurel.
Laurel led most of the contest and 18-15 after the first quarter. Northeast, 6-3 and 0-1 in 5-4A, was only able to get within two in the second and trailed 35-33 at the half. Laurel took control of the game in the third by outscoring Northeast 19-12 to lead 54-45.
Northeast then fought back in the fourth by outscoring the Tornadoes 24-17 but the comeback fell short as Laurel took the two-point win.
Jimmy Kelly led Northeast with 20 points while Marcus Betts chipped in 15. Clinton Hale and Jamal Martin each had 11 for the Trojans.
Clarkdale girls 71, Taylorsville 59: The Lady Bulldogs used strong second and third quarters as they pounded division foe Taylorsville by 12.
Taylorsville took the early 13-10 lead but Clarkdale stormed back in the second by outscoring the Lady Tartars 20-11 for a 30-24 halftime lead.
The Lady Bulldogs, 4-10 and 1-0 in 7-2A, continued to pour it on in the third with a 21-14 quarter to lead 51-38 after three. Taylorsville outscored Clarkdale 21-20 in the fourth for the final margin.
Carmelita Naylor poured in a game-high 34 points while Jor'Dan Orr had 12. Arleisha Wright had 11 and Tamar Brown 10.
Taylorsville boys 70, Clarkdale 27: Taylorsville led 39-8 at the half as the Tartars cruised to the easy win.
Anthony Holliday and Richard Matthews each had six points for Clarkdale while Timothy Brownfield had 17 points to lead Taylorsville.
Clarkdale fell to 3-8 and 0-1 in 7-2A.
Clarkdale will host Edinburg Friday.
Enterprise boys 76, Stringer 49: Burrell Gandy had 22 points and 16 rebounds as Enterprise stung Stringer Tuesday night.
After holding a slim 17-14 first-quarter lead, the Bulldogs exploded in the second and led 40-23 at the half. Enterprise continued to pour it on in the third with a 20-6 quarter and held on for the easy win.
Cory Boggan had 15 and Mitchell Burns 10 for Enterprise, which fell to 4-3.
Newton girls 81, Seminary 46: With big second and fourth quarters, Newton blasted Seminary Tuesday night.
After holding a slim 13-9 lead, Newton outscored Seminary 21-10 in the second quarter to lead 34-19 at the half. The Lady Tigers, 7-4, pushed the lead to 54-36 after the third before outscoring Seminary 27-10 in the fourth to take the win.
Twila Clayton led Newton with 24 points while Creoshia Williams and Kotreece Bender each had 12 points apiece. Latoya Wash added 10 and A.J. Loveless nine. Newton returns to action next Tuesday when they host Neshoba Central.
Newton boys 62, Seminary 54: Mario Qualls had 16 points as Newton downed Seminary by eight.
Lance Pruitt chipped in 14 while Ladarrian Blaylock added nine.
Wayne County boys 65, Quitman 61: Kasey Wilson scored 18 points as Wayne County held off Quitman.
Renaldo McKenzie led Quitman with 18 points while Lance Bartee had 16 points.
Noxubee County boys 72, West Lowndes 58: Reginald Roby had 28 points as Noxubee County pounded West Lowndes by 15.
Noxubee, 6-7, also got 14 points from Jonathan Brandy.
Northeast Jones boys 56, Bay Springs 53: Northeast Jones improved to 5-5 with a three-point win over Bay Springs.
Jason Forte led Bay Springs with 21 points.
Bay Springs girls 56, Northeast Jones 35: Bay Springs improved to 7-4 as the Lady Bulldogs downed Northeast Jones.
Kristi Martin paced Bay Springs with 24 points while Karen Clayton had 10 points.
Heidelberg girls 50, Raleigh 41: Jessica Yates pumped in 32 points to lead the Lady Oilers past Raleigh.
Noxubee County girls 67, West Lowndes 45: Elexis Cooper had 17 points as the Lady Tigers improved to 12-2 on the season.
Jessica Mason had had 14.
Leake Academy girls 81, Heidelberg Academy 42: Freshmen center Kristin Caldwell scored 24 points to lead the Leake Academy Rebelettes to an 81-42 win over Heidelberg Academy Monday night at Madden.
Leake, 13-2, took a 49-22 lead into halftime behind 22 points from Caldwell.
Leake also got 12 points apiece from Sue Chennault and Marisa Henry, nine from Laurin Gross, seven from Kelly Cumberland, and six each from B.J. Helton and Jessie Lavender.
Heidelberg, 4-5, got 12 points from Courtney Herrington, 11 from Ashlie McDennis, and eight from Shana Thornton.
Leake returns to action Friday at Canton Academy. Heidelberg's next action will be on Thursday against the Wayne-Newton winner in the Heidelberg tournament. The tournament begins today with Newton and Wayne meeting in the first two games and Sylva-Bay facing Central in the two late games.

Meridian girls 5, Hattiesburg 0: Erin Brown and Ramey Rush each scored two goals apiece as the Lady Wildcats improved to 6-2 on the season.
Whitney Poole added the other goal while Brown and Rush each had two assists. Deanna Harris also had an assist.
Forest girls 4, Clarkdale 3: The Lady Bulldogs lost a tight 4-3 contest to Forest and fell to 2-2 on the season.
Taylor Smith had two goals while Haley Heard had one.
Northeast Lauderdale girls 2, Laurel 1: Alyse Parker, Katie Bergin and Mellisa Brents each scored in a shootout as Northeast Lauderdale won a thriller against Laurel.
Northeast's regulation goal came by Ivy Rawson on an assist by Dani Smith.
Northeast improved to 3-2-2.
JUCO Hoops
EMCC men 81, Northeast Mississippi 71: Steve Hull's Lions jumped out a 12-point halftime lead and held tight in a 10-point win over the Trojans.
Six Lions scored in double figures as LaMario Mapp and Reshard Alonza led the way with 14 points each. Dennis Dupree and Raphael Edwards each had 13 points while Dennis Williams and McKenzie Lash each had 11 points apiece.
EMCC improved to 5-6 on the season with the win. EMCC returns to action Thursday when it hosts Southwest.
Northeast women 93, EMCC 81: Former Meridian High standout Kim Davis had 23 points but it wasn't enough as Northeast took a 12-point win after leading by 22 at the half.
After Davis, Natalie Williams had 14, while Emily Scarborough and Kelly Peoples each had 12.
