Meridian High girls basketball coach Donald Shirley has been there before.
But this edition of the Lady Wildcats hasn't.
The Lady Wildcats were recently ranked as the No. 1 team in the state by the Clarion-Ledger, which has the only basketball poll in the state at this time.
It isn't the first time a Meridian team has been ranked No. 1 in the state but it is the first time in more than five years. The 1994-95 team finished the regular season ranked No. 1 behind Michele Davis, LaToya Graham and sophomore Joni Crenshaw. They eventually lost in the Class 5A championship game to Harrison Central after leading by 14 points at halftime.
The Lady Wildcats are currently 11-0 heading into a tough weekend of competition that includes a trip to Newton County to face Richard Harris' squad that stands at 12-1. They also host a tough Heidelberg squad Saturday night.
So far, the Lady Wildcats have used a dominating inside game, led by Dandy Dozen selection Cantea Brown, to bull over opponents.
While Shirley is pleased with the play of his low-post players, he couldn't be happier with the play of junior point guard Stephanie Mosley.
As far as the Lady Wildcats chances in Jackson this year, Shirley hesitates a little.
