Female bowlers posting high scores

By By Mike Carson/The Meridian Star
Dec. 5, 2000
This week we turn center stage over to the ladies of Meridian.
Several of our MWBA bowlers posted outstanding scores during the holiday-shortened schedule. First up, we send some hearty congratulations to Nita Fike, who came only a 9-pin away from recording Meridian's fourth perfect game by a lady. Nita strung 10 strikes in a row before the nasty nine got a stubborn streak and refused to fall giving her a 289 game in the Bowlerettes league. Nita, who also has bowled the season's only 700 by a lady this year, finished the night with an impressive 691 set. Congratulations, Nita. Take it easy on Leon, though. You know how fragile his ego is.
Also shining for the gals this week was Mary Copeland(255), Marlene Stokes(234 and Denise Rutledge, who put together a nice 657 series which included a 241 game. Matar McClinton chipped in with a 223 game in the Monday Nighters league while Janie Tisdale added a 223 game/600 series.
Rounding out the scoring for the ladies this week, Cathy Jones recorded her third "6" of the season with a 603. Thanks to all the ladies this week for showing us guys how it is supposed to be done.
Speaking of the guys, Andrew Clayton out dueled Mike Carson by one pin to record the high series of the week with a 737. Carson got even though, taking the high game with a 287. Leon Fike managed a 278 game, which was 11 pins under what his wife shot just had to mention that and a 727 series.
Alan Hand entered the fray with a 717 and Tyrone McAlpine finished the scoring with a 277 game/709 series in the Wednesday Night Mixed league.
As most of you know, our "week" for this article ends on Wednesday. Look in next week's column for more big news from the Queen City league. Here's a hint: the number is now nine.
Dixie Bowl's annual Christmas Sale is now in progress. If you are looking for the perfect gift for the bowler in your life, take advantage of this once-a-year opportunity to save up to 50 percent on selected merchandise. All balls, bags, and shoes are reduced, giving you the chance to stuff that favorite stocking with big savings.
Here is a little trivia question for you to ponder until next week: Earlier in this article we mentioned that Nita Fike almost recorded the fourth 300 Game by a lady in Meridian. Who was the first Meridian lady to record a perfect fame? For those of you who don't know, we will have the answer in next week's column.
Until next week…Good luck and good bowling!
