The deadline for residents living outside the city limits to apply for a partial or full exemption from Lauderdale County's garbage fee is today.
County residents are charged $60 a year to dump household garbage in any one of about 100 green boxes located in rural areas.
Residents 65 years and older, or people with disabilities, qualify for a 50 percent reduction in the fee. Seniors who are disabled are fully exempt. The new ordinance covering the exemptions was passed last year by the Lauderdale County Board of Supervisors.
Hiatt said fewer people have applied for exemptions this year.
Other people who qualify for full exemption are those who hire a private company for garbage pick-up, such as many who live in subdivisions. People applying for exemption under this part of the ordinance need to bring a copy of their garbage pick-up contract with them.
People who own second homes may apply for a partial exemption.
People may also qualify for full exemptions if they own a vacant house.
To apply for garbage fee exemptions, go to the Tax Collector's office in Room 101 on the first floor of the Lauderdale County Courthouse before 5 p.m.
