Northeast Lauderdale head coach Lewis Lightsey knows that whenever he can get a win the way he did Tuesday night, it's a good thing.
His Trojans totally dismantled the Clarkdale Bulldogs 82-38 at the Ivy Sports Center on the campus of Meridian Community College.
The defensive workout seemed to be just what the Trojans needed as the Trojans held CHS to an astounding two points in the second half, including none in the final frame.
Marcus Betts paced the Trojan scoring attack with 20 points. The Trojans led 28-14 after one quarter, but CHS mounted a 22-15 run in the second quarter to pull to within seven points at the break.
But the Trojans cranked it up defensively in the third with a 26-2 mark. Jamaal Martin pumped in 18 points, while Stephen Dyess had 13.
Jimmy Kelly added 12 for NEL, which improved to 5-2. Bryant Gaddis hit four three-pointers, to lead CHS (3-6) with 12 points. Anthony Holliday and Richard Matthews each scored 11.
Northeast girls 55, Clarkdale 42: The Lady Trojans jumped out to an early lead and were able to hold on as CHS was only outscored by two in the second half.
Dorecious Powe led the Lady Trojans with 22 points and Quin Jackson spelled her with 11.
Carmelitia Naylor led Clarkdale and Tamara Brown had 10 for the Lady Bulldogs, who dropped to 2-10. CHS hurt their cause with 11-of-24 free throw shooting. Tamara Gibbs chipped in with nine for NEL, who improved to 5-4.
Northeast Lauderdale will face Southeast Lauderdale Friday night at the Ivy Sports Center.
