Lady Knights advance in Central Miss tourney

DECATUR If good girls' basketball whets your appetite, there's a plate full of games waiting for you at the Central Mississippi Classic at East Central Community College this week.
Eleven of the 12 girls' teams participating entered the event with winning records.
Lake, West Lauderdale, Philadelphia, and South Leake all came away with opening-night wins on Monday.
Action resumes Wednesday with West Lauderdale taking on Scott Central and Philadelphia playing Forest in the 4 p.m. games. The 7 p.m. matchups have Newton County squaring off with Lake in a battle of unbeatens and Neshoba Central playing South Leake.
Lake girls 59, Newton 48: The Lady Hornets outscored Newton 32-22 in the second half to remain undefeated.
Lake led 11-10 after one quarter and still held a one-point edge (27-26) at halftime despite being up 24-17 in the second quarter. Lake, 3-0, upped its lead to 39-30 with 2:35 to go in the third period with Newton's Kotreece Bender fouling out at the same time.
Newton rallied to within 43-39 by the end of the third quarter.
The Lady Hornets stretched back out to a 54-43 lead on a pullup jumper by Kim Cox with 3:14 to go. Lake led by as much as 13 (59-46).
Depth was a Lake ally.
Kimyatta Viverette led Lake with 19 points. Kim Cox had 11, while Odena Cox and Shariece Towner both had nine.
Newton, 3-3, got 11 points from Creoshia Williams, nine from Latonya Jordan, and six each from Bender, Twila Clayton, and Lenore Gray.
West Lauderdale girls 70, Carthage 33: The Lady Knights led 17-5 four minutes into their rout of Carthage.
West led 22-11 after one period and carried a 44-17 advantage into halftime behind Kristina Gardner's 19-point effort.
The Lady Knights took a 58-24 lead into the fourth quarter.
West, 7-3, was led by Gardner's 19 points. Julie McCrory scored 13, JaWanda Huggins had eight, and Shannon Lloyd added six. Twelve Lady Knights scored in the blowout.
Carthage, 1-9, got eight points apiece from Shannon Cheeks and Ashley Luckett.
South Leake 41, Noxapater 35: The Wildkittens improved to 7-3 despite a fourth quarter surge by the Lady Tigers.
Tierra Young scored a game-high 12 points and Monique Overstreet added 11 for South Leake. Krystle Hunter was high scorer for Noxapater with 11 and Krystala Foster chipped in with 10. Deidre Triplett added five.
Philadelphia girls 60, Edinburg 38: The Lady Tornadoes were quicker to the ball and took advantage of second-shot opportunities to coast to the first-round win.
Danielle Jones led PHS with 14 points and Mary Shannon added 12 as the Lady Tornadoes outscored EHS 34-11 in the second and fourth quarters.
Jessica Clemens added 10 for Philly.
The Lady Eagles were led in scoring by Kristen Thorton and Janette Robinson with 14 and 10, respectively.
Philadelphia (5-3) saw an early 36-16 lead whittled to 10 at the end of the third frame.
