High scores abound during holiday week

By By Mike Carson/The Meridian Star

We hope everyone had a nice Thanksgiving and now that the turkey has been gobbled down, it is back to business as usual in the bowling world.
All leagues are back in session this week as we head to the final weeks of the second round of play in most leagues. Races are tight in many leagues and the next few weeks will be deciding more roll-off contenders.
Despite the shortened week, scores continue to remain high as local bowlers find their marks.
It was good to see James Bloomer back on the lanes. James, who has been out since early summer with a broken leg, made his return memorable by coming up just a little short with a nine-in-a-row 279 in his first game back. Mike Carson held down the high game and high series last week with the season's eighth 300 game and a 755 series. Several other bowlers added to their 700 totals including Leon Fike (730), Randy Rives (729), Mike Cothern (713), Shayne Barfield (712), Randell Palmer (711), Jim Broderick, Jr. (706), Bill Fike (700) and Johnnie Blackmon (700). William Allen come oh-so-close to his first career 700 with a 698 set in the Friday night Ball &Chain league.
Johnnie Blackmon fired off another 279 game, coming only a 10-pin away what else? from perfection while Shayne Barfield reeled off a 276 game.
High game and high series for the ladies both went to Shirley Gaines who punched out a nice 248 game on her way to an impressive 658 series. Richelle Porter made her mark with a career-high 247 game while Matar McClinton added nice 240 game and Barbara Holden chalked up a 237. Congratulations to two of our ladies who recorded their first career 200 Game last week: Betty Hicks rolled a 204 in the Senior Citizens league and Julie Hunt recorded a fine 238 game while on her way to a career high 565 series. Congratulations, ladies!
Note: Due to the holiday schedule last week, scores and highlights from the Wednesday Night Mixed league are not included in this report. They will appear in next week's column. Until next week, Good luck and good bowling!
